Drilling Procedure

Our borehole drilling process

We follow a structured, professional borehole drilling procedure to ensure safety, reliability and long-term performance of every borehole we construct.

1
Geographical & Hydrogeological Survey
A geographical and hydrogeological survey assesses the landscape and subsurface composition to determine the best drilling location and depth.
2
Drilling Equipment Mobilization
Once payment is settled, our drilling rigs and support equipment are mobilized from our operations base to the drilling site.
3
Drilling & Borehole Construction
The rig positions at the identified point and uses a bit and hammer to penetrate the ground. We drill through formations, install steel casings, add gravel packing and prepare the borehole for pumping.
4
Water Testing & Pump Test
A 24-hour chemical and yield test is conducted to ensure the water is safe and suitable for domestic, commercial or agricultural use.
5
Securing the Borehole
We install top slabs, caps and protective structures to secure the borehole and prevent contamination or damage.
6
Water Collection & Storage Setup
As per client requirements, we install steel or plastic tanks, water towers and piping to deliver water where it is needed.
Borehole Costing

What determines the cost of a borehole?

Our pricing is transparent and competitive. We break down every cost component so you understand exactly what you are paying for and why.

Geology
Rock formations affect drilling time and casing requirements. Soft collapsing formations and hard rock both influence cost due to additional time, equipment wear and risk mitigation.
Location
Distance from our operations base affects mobilization costs for rigs, support trucks and personnel.
Depth
Borehole depth is charged per metre based on hydrologist recommendations and expected aquifer levels.
Lining, Packing & Water Analysis
Steel casing, gravel packing and detailed water analysis are included to ensure structural integrity and safe, high-quality water.

Our team of professionals explains and breaks down the cost of each borehole to enable you understand the final quote. We surpass expectations, leaving you with a borehole you can depend on for generations.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most common questions about borehole drilling, water quality, permits, costing, and long‑term maintenance.

A complete drilling project typically takes 3–7 days, depending on geology, depth, and site access. The workflow includes a hydrogeological survey, mobilization, drilling, casing, test pumping, and final equipping.
Yes. A survey identifies underground water zones, estimates depth, and predicts yield. It significantly reduces the risk of drilling a dry or low‑yield borehole. We coordinate surveys through licensed professionals.
You will need approvals from:
• Water Resources Authority (WRA)
• NEMA (where environmental assessment is required)
• County Government
• Additional clearance letters where applicable

Milimani Drilling supports clients through the entire permit process.
Costs vary by location and geology. Drilling rates generally fall between KES 6,000–10,000 per meter. A fully equipped borehole — including drilling, casing, pump installation, tower, and permits — may range from KES 500,000 to several million, depending on system design.
Depth depends on geological conditions. Most boreholes in Kenya range between 50m and 250m. The hydrogeological report determines the recommended depth.
Absolutely. A properly drilled borehole can supply water for irrigation, livestock, crop spraying, greenhouses, and general farm operations. It is a long‑term investment for agribusiness.
Yield variations can occur, but several improvement methods exist, including:
• Borehole development
• Airlifting
• Adjusting screens and casing
• Re‑evaluation of the aquifer
We advise on the best yield optimization approach for your site.
Borehole water can be safe for drinking, but water quality testing is essential. Testing identifies whether treatment such as filtration, chlorination, or mineral balancing is needed before domestic use.
Pump selection depends on depth, yield, and available power.
Options include:
• Electric submersible pumps
• Solar‑powered pumps for off‑grid or cost‑efficient operation

We provide full pump sizing and installation guidance.
Routine maintenance includes:
• Annual water testing
• Pump inspection
• Electrical system checks
• Occasional cleaning or rehabilitation

Regular servicing ensures long‑term reliability.
A well‑constructed and properly maintained borehole can remain functional for 20–50 years or more.
Yes. We design and install steel towers, elevated stands, plastic or steel tanks, and pressure management systems tailored to your water needs.
Yes. Solar pumping systems are ideal for farms, institutions, and rural homes. They reduce operational costs and provide dependable water supply even in off‑grid areas.
Yes. We perform 24‑hour pump tests to determine borehole yield, recovery rate, and sustainable pumping capacity.
